Bruce Lee Called Weed “Holy Stuff” And Passed Out Blunts At Parties

Bruce Lee is remembered as a martial arts icon, a movie star, and one of the most influential athletes of the 20th century. But according to stories from friends, co-stars, biographers, and even Bruce’s own handwritten letters, he also had a surprisingly open relationship with cannabis.

While many people picture Lee as a strict health fanatic who never touched anything outside of training, the reality appears to have been much more complicated.

According to reports, Lee first became interested in cannabis after suffering a devastating back injury in 1969. Doctors reportedly warned him that he might never move normally again, forcing him to rethink everything from training to recovery. Around that same period, cannabis became part of his routine, and some accounts claim he preferred consuming it in edible form rather than smoking it because he was concerned about the effects on his lungs.

The most legendary story comes from a house party.

As the story goes, Lee walked around, handing out blunts to everyone. When someone suggested that people could simply share, Lee allegedly replied that there was “no need to share” because he wanted everyone to have their own piece of what he called “Holy Stuff.”

That nickname has since become one of the most talked-about cannabis stories attached to the martial arts legend.

The conversation around Lee’s cannabis use grew even louder after a collection of handwritten letters surfaced decades after his death. The letters, which were later authenticated and sold at auction, referenced cannabis and other substances while offering a rare glimpse into the private life of a man who was often portrayed as almost superhuman.

Of course, Bruce Lee’s legacy was never built on cannabis. It was built on discipline, innovation, and a relentless drive to push human performance beyond what people thought was possible. But the stories surrounding his use of weed reveal a side of Lee that feels surprisingly modern: someone willing to experiment, challenge convention, and search for new ways to heal, recover, and expand his perspective.

Whether you see cannabis as a recovery tool, a creative aid, or simply a way to unwind, it’s hard not to be amused by the image of one of the greatest martial artists who ever lived walking through a party and making sure everyone had their own blunt.

Apparently, Bruce Lee wasn’t interested in sharing joints.

He wanted everyone to have their own “Holy Stuff.”
